Podcasts: Squad Chat with Third Culture Kids

Hi there!

I’m here today with something very different. While I like to focus on film and video for this blog, I’m actually going to share a podcast with you. It’s just too interesting to not share, and anyways audio is half of video format!

Meet the women of Squad Chat, a podcast I found while searching for TCK-related info on iTunes. Imagine Skyping with some of your closest friends (who happen to be countries away), and catching up on current events, both personal and international. That’s what you’ll find in this biweekly podcast. There is someone guiding the conversation, but when these girlfriends get giggly, the conversation always takes an interesting turn.

Click the picture below and listen to their first episode (it will actually take you to Soundcloud, for those who don’t use iTunes). Subscribe and/or leave a comment if you like their work.

Independent Vloggers: Shibu the Entertainer

Hi there!

I like the use of skits by these YouTubers. If you enjoyed Fat Mango and ObliviousD’s videos, then I highly recommend this one. Shibu gives us a rundown of his life in this world, and provides us with some of his most frustrating moments being a TCK. It’s all very lighthearted though, as Shibu encourages us to let home be where you feel comfortable. Let’s take a look.

Film Trailers: Ema Ryan Yamazaki

Hi there! Second on my film trailer list is Ema Ryan Yamazaki. Her films are Neither Here Nor There, and Monk By Blood. Neither Here Nor There is an exploration of adult TCKs, their self-reflection, and their perspective on life and the world. Perhaps Monk By Blood is not necessarily about a TCK; however, I am including it because it is the work of a TCK, and I expect that many of the themes covered in it are applicable to TCK lifestyles and ideals.

You can learn more about Yamazaki here. Below is the trailer for the 35 minute documentary, Neither Here Nor There.

Monk By Blood is a series on Al Jazeera. I believe links to further videos can be accessed via their Viewfinder Asia page. Unfortunately, viewing restrictions for my country prevent me from seeing more than the trailer. So, if you are able to watch Monk By Blood, please look it up and let me know how it is.

TED Talks and TEDx

Hi there! Today’s videos come from TED, the organization that strives to inspire and educate the world, hence it’s slogan, “Ideas worth spreading.”

I am sharing two videos with you. The first is from the larger set of conferences, TED Talks. In this TED Talks video, Pico Iyer sets out to answer a question many global nomads have had to ponder over and over again. The second video is from a TEDxYouth conference. In this video, a girl named Betty Park shares her very own TCK story and lifestyle.

While this blog focuses mainly on Third Culture Kid topics, I strongly encourage you to visit the TED Talks website. There’s a plethora of interesting and amazing videos on their site, all covering a variety of topics. Chances are you will find something you like, and be inspired. If you are a TCK, hopefully these two videos below will offer you some inspiration.
